Dental Implant Procedure

Tooth loss not only changes the way you look, but it can also prevent you from eating your favorite foods and smiling with confidence. Dental implants are a great option for those hoping to restore the look and function of missing teeth.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants provide a foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel, and function like natural teeth. When you lose a tooth, you lose the root and the crown. To replace that tooth, Dr. Pasternak first replaces the root with a dental implant. The implant is a titanium screw that is gently inserted into the jawbone where it serves as a permanent anchor for the new tooth.

During the healing phase, the titanium implants are beneath the surface of the gums bonding with the jawbone. This creates a strong foundation for a crown. After the implant has bonded to the jaw, Dr. Pasternak will uncover the implant and attach a small support post, or an abutment. When the abutment is secure, a new replacement tooth is placed.

A dental implant procedure is a mutual effort between an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and your restorative dentist. Dr. Pasternak performs the initial tooth extractions, necessary bone grafting, and implant surgery. Your dentist creates and fits the permanent prosthesis and any temporary prosthesis needed during the entire process.
