Bone Grafting

Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that replaces missing bone. In the field of dentistry, bone grafts are commonly used to ensure that enough bone is available to support the placement of dental implants. Bone grafting not only allows us to place implants of proper length and width but also gives us an opportunity to restore a tooth's functionality and appearance.

In some patients, bone grafting might be necessary to repair implant sites with inadequate bone structure. Changes in bone structure happen due to previous extractions, gum disease, or trauma to the mouth or jaw. The bone used for bone grafting is either obtained from a tissue bank, or taken from your own jaw. In some cases, we use special membranes that dissolve under the gum to encourage bone regeneration and protect the bone graft. We call this procedure guided bone regeneration, or guided tissue regeneration.
